Abraham Harold Maslow was an American theorist who studied the needs of human beings and how these needs can motivate people to work harder and be happy. He began his studies observing the behavior of monkeys. Although the investigation of the monkeys realized that some needs took priority over others. He took these ideas and produced his famous hierarchy of needs.

In the bottom of this hierarchy are the physiological needs of the individual. These needs include water, oxygen, heat, vitamin C, rest, avoid pain and sex. The absence of these physiological needs leads to the body's thirst for things to have met those needs before.

Above the physiological needs are the needs of security. When most people are satisfied physiological needs begin to worry about security. Things like having a house in a safe area, saving for the future security and jobs to all meet this need.

After the first two areas are meeting the needs of love and belonging set in. The need for friendship, lover, child or simply a sense of community is what the person wants at this time.

The estimated level four requirements are needed to satisfy people's happiness. Maslow divided this into a lower and upper level of need. The lower is a need for respect, status, attention and recognition. The higher refers to the stage of self-respect and independence. Are assessed as higher in the table, and from within the person and are more difficult to lose.

At the top of the model is self-actualization. This stage is when a person has a constant aspiration of all its potential. The need to feel full and be all that can be. Maslow suggested that only two percent of the population of the worlds' never reach the stage of self-actualization.

Clayton Alderfer further develop the work of Maslow. Suggested that the five stages identified by Maslow can be reduced to three areas. He called this his life, relationships and growth theory. The physiological and safety steps in Maslow's hierarchy became more of existence in the theory of Alderfer. Interpersonal love and esteem stages became the class of relationship and self-esteem and self-actualization stage that became category growth. He also suggested that these categories at the same time all the functions and importance of each stage varies among people and even his mood.

This theory can be applied in construction management by viewing the company as a whole and the implementation of the stages of Maslow's hierarchy of needs the same. The first stage of the project is undertaking as having resources that are needed to start. These can include tools, drawings and workers affected by the project. Then the company needs financial support or sufficient funds to begin the project, which refers to the stage of security. They also need a sense of security that will be paid in full for the completed project.

The acceptance of the company is what would be the next. This could be the acceptance of a planning department or the surrounding community. The stage of self-esteem that come into play when the project is underway and the company can ensure that the development has been well planned and executed. The final stage of self-realization can complete the project on time and budget.

Taking this theory at the individual level in the construction industry is just as valid. Take a worker for example, need the tools and instructions to start the process. Next, you need to know your work is safe, otherwise, do not commit to the project. A feeling of being accepted as part of the team then meets the need of belonging you have. The stage of self-esteem can be achieved through praise and recognition for good work or the possibility of promotion. Self-realization is very difficult to achieve, but could be achieved through the work that was completed to perfection.
